Biochar is a type of charcoal that is made by heating organic matter in an oxygen-limited environment. The main component of biochar is carbon, which comes from plant waste. The carbon is stabilized during the pyrolysis process. When biochar is added to soil, the carbon remains in the soil for hundreds of years. This makes biochar a long-term carbon removal solution.
Biochar is also used in agriculture as a soil amendment. It improves soil quality by increasing the water-holding capacity of soils, retaining nutrients better, and rebalancing acidic soils. This results in increased crop productivity and the possibility of switching to 100% organic farming. If biochar is deployed on a global scale, it has the potential to remove 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year.
La Carbonerie produces highly concentrated biochar.
Long-term carbon storage solutions need to be developed in addition to short-term ones like forestries. However, a lot of the current ones in development are based on very early-stage highly technological solutions that are still not competitive to really fight climate change. Moreover, the massive use of non-organic fertilizer pollutes soils in depth, and always contributes to more GHG emissions.
All La Carbonerie carbon credits are only available on Riverse registry. The carbon credits covers all the activity of La Carbonerie plant, 42 Rue des Confréries, 71530 Crissey.
La Carbonerie carbon avoidance and capture are calculated with a cradle-to-grave comparative lifecycle analysis, on "global warming" criteria, following ISO 14067 norm.
All carbon credits currenly available are ex-post, meaning the carbon avoidance and capture has already been verified and thus are real.
Key impact criterias:
Carbon credits is the main way to finance large scale biochar production, as it enables to produce high quantity at low cost that can be used for soil regeneration, thus respecting financial additionnality.
There is no regulation making La Carbonerie deployment compulsory, respecting the regulation additionnality criteria.
La Carbonerie biochar enables to store carbon into soil for centuries, implying a high level of permanence.
Biochar end-of-life is monitored in Riverse process to ensure the real number of carbon really stored.
La Carbonerie is aligned with the European Taxonomy and do not harm any of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Avoidance of leakage is also taken into account during the certification process.
