Fiber-to-fiber textile recycling plant deployment

Sector:
Waste

The solution

Weturn provides a solution to the textile industry's waste of raw materials through a new logistical and industrial channel dedicated to recycling surplus stocks (unsold items, branded rolls, production scraps) into new quality raw materials. A low-impact, committed, circular and transparent solution for fashion players and their suppliers.

Weturn enables the reuse of unused natural textile materials into new textile products. Their process is entirely mechanical and therefore reduces water and CO2 consumption. The recycled material is originally a distribution waste (unsold goods) or a production waste (industrial scraps) that would have been destroyed before.

The issue

The textile industry accounts for about 10% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, and is thus in the top 10 of the most polluting industries. The cause? The production of yarn - 43% of the impact of the sector corresponds to the production of yarn, the transport - mostly from Asia to the West - and the destruction of phenomenal quantities of unsold goods (~500 billion €/year) caused by the fast fashion industry. These are the challenges facing this industry if it wants to meet its objectives and go beyond. And today the step to take is big, in 2020 only 0.5% of the yarn was of recycled origin.

Core Carbon Principles

01

Unicity

All Weturn carbon credits are only available on Riverse registry. Currently, these carbon credits covers all the recycling activities of Weturn.

02

Measurability & reality

Weturn carbon avoidances are calculated with a cradle-to-grave comparative lifecycle analysis, on "global warming" criteria, following ISO 14067 norm.
All carbon credits currenly available are ex-post, meaning the carbon avoidances have already been verified and thus are real.
Key impact criterias:

  • tons of wastes collected
  • t.km travelled
  • tons (and types) of new fiber produced
03

Additionnality

Currently, alternatives to Weturn are 3 times more carbon-intensive but far cheaper. Carbon credits help to scale the process to be more competitive, respecting the financial additionnality criteria.
There is no regulation making Weturn very efficient recycling process compulsory, respecting the regulation additionnality criteria.

04

Permanence

Carbon avoidances are not concerned by permanence criteria as avoidance are effective immediately without reversibility.

05

Rebound effects

Weturn is aligned with the European Taxonomy and do not harm any of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Avoidance of leakage is also taken into account during the certification process.
